The number one reason POCs drag on is the absence of explicit success criteria. When both sides haven't agreed on what "success" looks like before the evaluation begins, you're setting up for scope creep, moving goalposts, and a deal that never closes.
A good POC success criteria template does three things: it defines what will be tested, how results will be measured, and what happens when the evaluation is complete. It creates accountability for both the vendor and the buyer, and it transforms an open-ended trial into a structured, time-bound evaluation.
The POC governance framework concept—establishing clear rules of engagement before a proof of concept begins—is central to how we approach evaluation strategy at Solutions Advisory Partners. Without governance, POCs become free consulting. With it, they become the fastest path to a solutions design endorsement and a closed deal.
A well-designed template covers: evaluation objectives, specific test scenarios, measurable success metrics, timeline and milestones, resource commitments from both sides, escalation process, and decision criteria for go/no-go.
